New Delhi, 08 October (H.S.): Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the Central government, the Election Commission and others, asserting that those who undermine democracy will not be spared and will be held accountable. “This is my guarantee, and you will see it happen,” he said during an Opposition MPs’ protest in New Delhi.
Speaking to the media during the demonstration, Gandhi said, “Around 300 MPs wanted to peacefully raise their voice, but on the very first day we were stopped near the Election Commission office. The next day, we were prevented from going to Jantar Mantar and our people were beaten.”
Gandhi named Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar while making a series of allegations against them. He alleged that the four had, through a “criminal conspiracy”, taken control of the country’s power structure and institutions. He further alleged that they had collectively undermined the Constitution and carried out large-scale “vote theft”.
The allegations are part of the Opposition’s continuing campaign against the Election Commission and the Central government over alleged irregularities in the electoral process and issues relating to electoral rolls. The INDIA bloc has been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and has continued to mobilise over the matter. Recent protests in New Delhi have included attempts by Opposition MPs to meet election officials and demonstrations at Jantar Mantar.
Gandhi’s remarks came amid escalating confrontation between the Opposition and the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have raised allegations of irregularities, while the Election Commission has maintained that the revision process is intended to ensure the integrity and accuracy of electoral rolls.
