New Delhi, 08 October (H.S.): The 57th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council began on Thursday at Bharat Mandapam here under the chairmanship of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The meeting opened discussions on proposals under ‘GST 2.0’, including doing away with the direct power of GST officials to make arrests and simplifying compliance and procedural requirements.

According to a post by the Ministry of Finance on X, the meeting is being attended by the Chief Ministers of Delhi, Goa, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Meghalaya; the Deputy Chief Ministers of Manipur and Telangana; and Finance Ministers and senior members from various states and Union Territories.

The meeting is also being attended by the Secretary of the Department of Revenue, the Chairman and members of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), and senior officials of the Ministry of Finance.

It may be recalled that the 56th meeting of the GST Council had approved changes to the tax slabs. At the latest meeting, the Council is expected to focus on further measures aimed at simplifying compliance and easing the overall GST framework.
