A Tribute to the Heroes of the Kargil War on the 94th Anniversary of the Indian Air Force

lEH, 08 October (H.S.): The Indian Air Force’s historic cycling expedition from Kanyakumari to Kargil, undertaken as a tribute to the bravehearts of the Kargil War, culminated today at the Kargil War Memorial. The expedition was flagged in by Air Vice Marshal Anand Sondhi, AVSM, VSM, Air Officer Commanding, HQ AOC J&K and Ladakh.

Undertaken to commemorate the 94th Anniversary of the Indian Air Force, the expedition honours the courage, valour and supreme sacrifice of the heroes of the Kargil War, while carrying their legacy of patriotism, service and devotion to duty across the length and breadth of the nation.

The expedition was conducted in three segments:

* Segment I: Thiruvananthapuram to Hyderabad, completed on 18 Feb 2026.

* Segment II: Hyderabad to New Delhi, concluded on 08 Mar 2026.

* Segment III: New Delhi to Kargil, covering approximately 1,145 km, commenced from the National War Memorial, New Delhi, on 22 Sep 2026.

The first two segments together covered approximately 3,440 km. The concluding segment from National War Memorial, New Delhi to Kargil War Memorial was undertaken by 15 cyclists, supported by an integral support team. After a halt at BTC Drass, the team proceeded towards the Kargil War Memorial, where the cyclists paid solemn tribute to the bravehearts of Operation Vijay and Operation Safed Sagar, reaffirming the Indian Air Force’s enduring commitment to honouring their selfless service and supreme sacrifice in defence of the nation.

The third segment was led by Group Captain A K Singh and coordinated by Wing Commander Vikrant Uniyal and Wing Commander Suresh Razdan.

The expedition transcended the physical challenge of traversing the country on bicycles. As part of its Bigger Cause, the team interacted with and engaged the youth at various locations en route, encouraging them to consider a career in the Armed Forces and providing them an insight into the ethos, values, discipline, camaraderie and spirit of adventure that define the Indian Air Force.

The journey also served as a powerful reminder that the legacy of the fallen is not confined to the battlefields where they made the supreme sacrifice. It lives on through every generation inspired by their courage and through every citizen who carries forward the values for which they served.

The Kanyakumari to Kargil expedition is therefore not merely a journey across India; it is a journey of remembrance, inspiration and national pride, honouring the fallen, inspiring the youth and carrying the spirit of the Indian Air Force to every corner of the nation.
