New Delhi, 07 October (H.S.): Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and others for allegedly entering the premises of Akashvani Bhavan without permission during the Opposition’s march against the Chief Election Commissioner. Officials said this on Wednesday.
According to the police, the FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint alleging unauthorised entry into Akashvani Bhavan and staging a sit-in protest there. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
On Tuesday, leaders and workers of the INDIA bloc had attempted to march from Parliament House towards the headquarters of the Election Commission. The police stopped them midway, following which Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and some other leaders entered the premises of Akashvani Bhavan and sat there in protest. According to the police, the protesters were asked to leave the premises, but they remained there.
During the episode, the police detained around 260 people. Those detained included Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other Members of Parliament and supporters. The police later removed the protesters from the Akashvani Bhavan premises and took them into custody.
According to the police, permission had neither been sought from the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, for the INDIA bloc’s march nor had permission been granted for it. Despite this, the protesters began marching from Parliament House towards the Election Commission headquarters on Tuesday morning. The police had put up barricades along the route to stop them.
Opposition parties have been protesting over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleging irregularities in the functioning of the Election Commission. Raising the issue of “vote theft”, the protesters also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The detailed particulars of the sections invoked in the FIR and the names of the accused have not yet been made public.
