SPECIALIST DOCTORS SHORTAGE

Kolkata, 07 October (H.S.) : A fake doctor from West Bengal’s Purba Bardhaman district, who was attempting to flee to the United Arab Emirates and settle there with his wife, was arrested at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi on Tuesday. A special team from the Bardhaman police station departed for the national capital on Wednesday to secure his transit remand and bring him back to the state.

The accused, identified as Sheikh Saidul, came under the scanner in the first week of September following the tragic death of a child during a phimosis surgery at 'Life Care', a private nursing home in the Nawabhat area. The victim's family lodged a formal complaint alleging gross medical negligence, while the child's mother, Shilpa Roy, claimed she was receiving threatening phone calls.

A joint investigation conducted by the Bardhaman police and the state health department revealed that Saidul was operating without a valid medical degree and had been practicing on forged credentials. Leads connected to his case also helped the health department identify several other suspected fake medical practitioners.

Following the expose, the administration sealed the nursing home and arrested two of its operators, though Saidul managed to abscond.

Investigators discovered that Saidul, aided by another nursing home owner, had fled his residence in the Golapbag More area and escaped to Dubai, where he was residing on a 'visa on arrival'. To evade electronic surveillance, he frequently changed mobile SIM cards to communicate with his wife, orchestrating a plan to relocate her to Dubai permanently. In response, law enforcement authorities issued a Lookout Circular (LOC) against him.

The escape plan unraveled on Tuesday when Saidul's wife arrived in Delhi as per their arrangement, and Saidul flew in from Dubai to receive her. Immigration officials and local police immediately intercepted and detained him upon landing. The Purba Bardhaman district police were promptly notified, and the accused will soon be produced before a local court in Bardhaman.

Expressing relief over the arrest, the deceased child's mother, Shilpa Roy, expressed her gratitude to the police force. She demanded the strictest possible punishment for the accused, stating that justice must be served so that no other mother has to endure the loss of a child.
