Guwahati, 06 October (HS): Ashiq Ali, an accused in the death of Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria, was injured in police firing during an operation at Dharapur here on Tuesday morning. Police said Ali allegedly attempted to escape from custody.
Following the incident, Ali was taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment. The firing took place on the day his eight-day police custody was scheduled to end and he was to be produced before a court.
Ali is accused in connection with the death of 21-year-old Nimisha Thakuria, whose body was recovered from a homestay in Guwahati late on September 25. The police subsequently launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Guwahati Deputy Commissioner of Police Bolin Deuri had earlier said that Ali claimed Nimisha had died by suicide. However, police said the claim had not been verified and investigators were examining all possible angles.
Police said Ali admitted to being in a relationship with Nimisha. Investigators are examining the circumstances in which the two met, the events preceding Nimisha being found unconscious at the homestay and other aspects of the case. The investigation is underway.-----------
