Melbourne, 06 October (H.S.):
Experienced New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell has joined the Melbourne Renegades for the 16th season of the Big Bash League (BBL). Bracewell’s arrival strengthens the Renegades’ overseas contingent, with the versatile cricketer capable of changing the course of a match with both bat and ball.
Bracewell is the Renegades’ second international signing for the upcoming season. He joins England batter Jonny Bairstow, who was previously recruited by the team. His addition gives the Melbourne side another experienced option as it finalises its playing XI.
The 35-year-old Bracewell made his international debut for New Zealand in 2022 and subsequently established himself as a valuable player across all three formats. He has also captained New Zealand in both One-Day International and T20 International cricket. However, his value extends beyond his international record, with Bracewell having made an impact in several leading franchise T20 competitions around the world.
Bracewell has played more than 200 T20 matches, scoring over 3,600 runs at a strike rate of more than 135, while also taking over 100 wickets. He has featured in competitions including the Indian Premier League, Pakistan Super League, Major League Cricket, The Hundred and Super Smash.
His unbeaten 141 off 65 balls for Wellington in the 2022 Super Smash remains a striking example of his batting ability. The innings is the highest individual score recorded in New Zealand’s domestic T20 cricket to date.
He has continued his aggressive approach to batting in franchise cricket. In the 2026 Pakistan Super League, he recorded a strike rate of more than 170, underlining his ability to score rapidly in the middle and lower order. Speaking about the opportunity to play in the BBL, Bracewell said in a statement issued by the franchise, “I’m excited to join the Renegades. The BBL is a competition I’ve watched a lot over the years and have always wanted to experience. Playing in Melbourne, at the MCG in front of big crowds, is going to be special.”
One of Bracewell’s biggest strengths is his ability to take on different responsibilities rather than being confined to a single role. A left-handed batter and right-arm off-spinner, he will give Melbourne greater flexibility to adjust its combination according to conditions and opposition. He said, “I enjoy contributing in different ways—whether that’s with the bat, ball or in the field. I’m looking forward to doing whatever the team needs to help us win.”
Renegades head coach Luke Ronchi believes Bracewell’s versatility could prove particularly valuable in T20 cricket. Ronchi said, “Michael gives us a lot of options, and that’s really important in T20 cricket. He’s a genuine all-rounder. He can play a number of different roles with the bat, is a very clever off-spinner and has a lot of experience playing international and franchise cricket around the world. He has also been given the responsibility of captaining New Zealand, which says a lot about how he sees the game and the personality he brings into a team.”
Bracewell’s arrival gives the Renegades another experienced international player. His ability to contribute in all three departments could provide Melbourne with greater flexibility in shaping its playing XI and developing its strategy for BBL 16.
