Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice D.K. Upadhyaya, was given an emotional farewell on Tuesday following his elevation as a judge of the Supreme Court. Addressing the gathering, he said he had tried to make the law somewhat flexible in the direction of justice so that deserving litigants could receive justice. He described being able to do so as a blessing. He also took oath as a judge of the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
At the farewell ceremony organised by the Delhi High Court Bar Association, Justice Upadhyaya said that, like other judges, he too had encountered situations in which the law did not appear to lead to the right outcome and seemed disconnected from justice. In such circumstances, he said, he had attempted to make the law somewhat flexible in favour of justice so that deserving litigants could obtain relief. He described the opportunity to do so as a blessing.
Following Justice Upadhyaya’s elevation, President Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice Nitin Vasudeo Sambre as the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Justice Sambre also assumed charge as Acting Chief Justice on Tuesday.
Justice D.K. Upadhyaya obtained his law degree from Lucknow University and began practising law in 1991. He has considerable expertise in civil and constitutional matters. In May 2007, he was appointed Chief Standing Counsel for the government at the Allahabad High Court. In November 2011, he was appointed a judge of the Allahabad High Court. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court in July 2023 and subsequently became Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court in January 2025.
