Kolkata, 06 October (H.S.) : A violent clash broke out between members of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on the Raiganj University campus on Tuesday, following a dispute over posters demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
According to university sources, the confrontation originated from posters put up on the campus protesting the alleged deletion of eligible voters from electoral rolls in connection with the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive across the country.
The SFI alleged that the ABVP mobilised outside elements onto the university premises, who then carried out an unprovoked assault on its cadres. The Left-backed student outfit claimed that several of its members sustained injuries during the altercation and had to be admitted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Refuting the allegations, the ABVP denied orchestrating the violence, countering that SFI activists had raised objectionable and provocative slogans inside the university, prompting resistance from students. The ABVP further claimed that several of its own workers were injured during the ensuing melee.
University authorities stated that the dispute quickly escalated after arguments broke out over the anti-CEC posters. Local police personnel alongside university security staff were deployed to the campus to intervene, successfully dispersing the rival factions and bringing the situation under control.
