New Delhi, 06 October (H.S.): The Delhi Police have arrested 35-year-old Himanshu Jain for allegedly demanding Rs 25 lakh in extortion from a senior doctor while claiming to be a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Police have recovered the mobile phone and SIM card allegedly used to make the extortion calls, as well as the car allegedly used in the crime.
According to police, the complainant is a senior doctor at Action Balaji Hospital. On October 2, he informed the police that he had received a threatening call on his personal mobile number. The caller identified himself as a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and demanded Rs 25 lakh in extortion. To intimidate the doctor, the caller also referred to details concerning his personal life. Following the complaint, an FIR was registered at the Paschim Vihar East police station under FIR No. 307/26 and Section 308(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
A joint team comprising personnel from the police station and the Special Staff was constituted to investigate the case. Police began tracking the accused through technical surveillance and human intelligence. The location and other technical details associated with the mobile number used to call the doctor were analysed. Police asked the doctor to remain in contact with the accused and record their conversations over the phone.
On October 2, the accused called the doctor again and instructed him to bring the extortion money to a location near Jaipur Golden Hospital in Rohini. Acting on this information, the police laid a trap at the designated location. When the accused arrived to collect the money, the police team apprehended him. He was identified as Himanshu Jain, 35, a resident of Puth Gram Sabha in Delhi.
During interrogation, police learned that Jain had allegedly been involved in criminal cases in the past. A case related to extortion and criminal intimidation was registered against him at the Subhash Place police station in 2018. In 2020, another case was registered at the Preet Vihar police station under various provisions relating to extortion, criminal intimidation, destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy, among other offences.
According to police, during questioning, the accused said he had demanded the extortion money from the doctor to meet his financial needs. At his instance, police recovered the mobile phone and SIM card allegedly used to make the extortion calls. The car allegedly used in the crime was also recovered and seized.
Police are now verifying the accused’s claim that he is associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Investigators are also examining whether any other person was involved in the alleged conspiracy to threaten the doctor. Further investigation into the case is underway.
