Silchar (Assam), 06 October (H.S.). The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has registered a sweeping victory in the first-ever Silchar Municipal Corporation election, winning 34 of the 42 wards, according to the declared results.
The ruling party had already secured unopposed victories in wards 9 and 20, further strengthening its position in the newly formed civic body.
The BJP's alliance partner, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), won two wards, numbers 16 and 26. The Congress managed to secure victory in only one ward, ward 30, while independent candidates emerged victorious in five wards — 1, 19, 24, 25 and 42.
The results mark a significant setback for the Congress in Silchar, one of Assam's major urban centres. In contrast, the BJP's strong performance has given the ruling alliance a dominant position in the 42-member civic body.
Silchar was earlier governed as a municipality. The latest election was the first civic poll held after the town was upgraded to a municipal corporation.------------
