Kolkata , 06 October (H.S.): A local court in Medinipur remanded Sumit Roy, personal assistant to senior Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee, to 14 days of judicial custody following the expiry of his police remand. In a separate proceeding on Tuesday, arrested Trinamool Congress leader Ajit Maity, implicated in a financial corruption case registered at the Kharagpur Local Police Station, was also produced before the court and sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

Roy was apprehended in connection with a land scam in Salboni, West Bengal. Investigating agencies allege that he played a pivotal role in the fraudulent conversion and unauthorized sale of government land using forged documentation. During the ongoing investigation, the name of former Medinipur legislator Mrigen Hazra also surfaced in connection with the irregularities.

According to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), extensive malpractice involving public land in Salboni took place between 2018 and 2021, with multiple individuals allegedly involved in the fraudulent transactions.

In addition to the land dispute, Roy faces separate charges at the Salboni Police Station concerning an illegal sand-mining racket. Investigators stated before the court that Roy received financial kickbacks to facilitate the transit of overloaded sand-bearing vehicles. The police further submitted that forensic analysis of his mobile phone revealed the use of multiple SIM cards registered under the identities of other individuals.
