Thiruvananthpuram, 05 Oct (H.S.):
The weather department defines heavy rainfall as precipitation ranging from 64.5 millimetres to 115.5 millimetres within a 24-hour period. The warning concerns isolated locations within the listed districts, rather than uniform rainfall across their entire geographical area.
According to the department, a cyclonic circulation persists over the Gulf of Mannar and the adjoining coastal areas of southern Tamil Nadu. The system is located at an altitude of 0.9 kilometres above mean sea level.
An atmospheric trough extends from this circulation towards the east-central Arabian Sea, passing through northern Tamil Nadu and northern Kerala. This trough also lies at 0.9 kilometres above mean sea level, the weather bulletin said.
The combined influence of these two weather systems is expected to bring rain to Kerala through Tuesday. Alongside the district-specific rainfall alerts, the forecast highlights the possibility of lightning and gusty winds, making thunderstorms another concern during this spell. The yellow alerts call for vigilance in the districts identified in the forecast.
