Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a public-sector steel company, increased its crude steel production by 1 per cent year-on-year to 9.6 million tonnes during the first half of the current financial year 2026-27 (April-September).
The company achieved several notable milestones during the first half of financial year 2026-27 and maintained strong momentum in September as well. SAIL said that its hot metal production increased by 2 per cent to 10.2 million tonnes during the first half of the current financial year, while finished steel production rose by 1 per cent to 8.39 million tonnes.
The company said the share of finished steel in total saleable steel production increased from 86.8 per cent in April-September 2025 to 89.2 per cent during the corresponding period this year. However, SAIL did not disclose its total saleable steel production figure. During the period, supplies of long rails, wheels and axles to Indian Railways increased by 7 per cent and 3 per cent, respectively, compared with the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
SAIL, which comes under the Ministry of Steel, is India’s largest public-sector steel producer. The company has an installed steelmaking capacity of more than 20 million tonnes per annum.
