New Delhi, 05 October (H.S.): The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on Monday staged a symbolic protest at Jantar Mantar against alleged “vote theft”, with protesters appearing as “living corpses”. The demonstration was led by NSUI National President Vinod Jakhar. The protesting students demanded the immediate resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
During the protest, Delhi Police detained several NSUI members, including National President Vinod Jakhar. Strongly condemning the police action, NSUI said that the voices of students raising their concerns through democratic means could not be silenced by detaining them.
NSUI National President Vinod Jakhar said NSUI activists had taken to the streets dressed as “living corpses” to send a clear message to the country. He questioned what democracy meant if citizens’ votes were allegedly stolen and their democratic rights undermined.
He said NSUI’s demand was clear: the Election Commission must establish accountability, and CEC Gyanesh Kumar should resign and face action.
Condemning the detention of students, Vinod Jakhar said that instead of answering serious questions concerning alleged vote theft and voters’ rights, the students were being detained by the police. He said NSUI would continue to stand firmly in defence of the democratic rights of every voter.
NSUI Media In-charge Ravi Hanuman Pandey said the government and the Election Commission should understand that democratic dissent could not be suppressed through police action. He said that if raising a voice for the protection of every vote and the defence of democracy was considered a crime, NSUI would commit this “crime” with even greater determination every day. He added that the campaign would continue.
