Adelaide, 31 October (H.S.): A brilliant half-century from Laura Wolvaardt and an impressive bowling performance by Amanda-Jade Wellington helped Adelaide Strikers begin their Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) campaign with a victory. The Strikers defeated Melbourne Stars by 21 runs after posting 185 for two in their 20 overs. In reply, Melbourne managed 164 for seven.

After winning the toss, Melbourne Stars elected to field, but Adelaide's opening pair made an aggressive start, putting together 54 runs inside the first seven overs. Maia Bouchier scored 30 off 21 balls before being dismissed by Annabel Sutherland.

Wolvaardt then anchored the innings with an impressive 70 off 50 deliveries, striking nine boundaries. Her innings came to an end in the 18th over when Kim Garth dismissed her.

Adelaide captain Tahlia McGrath and Madeline Penna accelerated the scoring in the closing overs. McGrath remained unbeaten on 43 off 36 balls, while Penna produced a blistering unbeaten 36 from just 13 deliveries, hitting four boundaries and three sixes. The pair added 42 runs in the final two overs to take Adelaide's total to 185.

Chasing the target, Melbourne Stars got off to a flying start through Meg Lanning and Rhys McKenna, who added 77 runs for the opening wicket in eight overs. Lanning scored 32 off 24 balls, while McKenna contributed 40 from 31 deliveries.

However, leg-spinner Wellington turned the match around in the ninth over. She struck twice in the space of four deliveries, trapping Lanning leg before wicket before bowling Amy Jones for two. Melbourne subsequently continued to lose wickets at regular intervals.

Naomi Stalenberg attempted to keep the contest alive with 32 off 25 balls, but Sophie Ecclestone and Eleanor Larosa tightened the pressure with disciplined bowling. Wellington claimed three wickets, while Ecclestone and Larosa picked up two wickets each.

Brief Scores: Adelaide Strikers 185/2 in 20 overs (Laura Wolvaardt 70, Tahlia McGrath 43 not out, Madeline Penna 36 not out; Kim Garth 1/27) defeated Melbourne Stars 164/7 in 20 overs (Rhys McKenna 40, Meg Lanning 32; Amanda-Jade Wellington 3/28) by 21 runs.
