Chennai, 30 Oct (H.S.): Former Tamil Nadu minister and DMK leader P.K. Sekar Babu has been summoned to appear before the Vepery police on Friday for questioning in connection with an alleged confrontation with police personnel at the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office.

The summons follows a case registered against Sekar Babu and DMK MP Dr Kalanidhi Veeraswamy on allegations of threatening police personnel and obstructing them from discharging their duties.

The incident occurred when former DMK minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was being questioned at the Commissioner’s office following his arrest last Monday in connection with an alleged Rs 400-crore fraud.

Sekar Babu, Veeraswamy and several DMK workers had gathered outside the office while the questioning was under way. A video showing the two leaders engaged in a heated argument with police personnel subsequently circulated widely on social media.

Following the incident, the Vepery police registered a case against both leaders. The allegations recorded against them include issuing death threats and preventing police personnel from carrying out their official responsibilities.

Police have now directed Sekar Babu to appear in person at the Vepery police station for questioning in connection with that case. His scheduled appearance on Friday follows the summons issued by the investigating officers.

However, it remained unclear whether the former minister would comply with the summons and appear before police during the day or seek additional time.

The case against Sekar Babu and Veeraswamy concerns their alleged conduct during the confrontation at the Commissioner’s office. It is separate from the fraud investigation in which Anbil Mahesh was arrested and questioned.

The questioning sought through the summons relates to Sekar Babu’s alleged role in the incident involving police personnel. The account available does not indicate whether Veeraswamy has also been directed to appear for questioning or whether either leader has responded to the allegations.
