Guwahati, 30 October (HS): A sudden outburst from a glacial lake in Bhutan has raised the possibility of flash floods in downstream areas of Assam, prompting alerts in vulnerable regions.

The incident occurred at Shintaphu Lake in Bhutan's Gasa district on Thursday evening, releasing a large volume of water that is flowing towards downstream river systems.

Lower Assam is among the areas facing potential risks, particularly settlements located along the Sankosh River. The sudden discharge of water has heightened apprehensions about a possible rise in river levels and flooding in low-lying areas.

Authorities in Assam have sounded an alert in vulnerable locations and advised people residing near riverbanks to remain cautious and shift to safer places if required.

Officials are keeping a close watch on the water flow and river levels to assess the situation. The extent of the possible impact on downstream areas is yet to be ascertained. No casualties have been reported from Bhutan so far.------------
