Guwahati, 30 October (HS): Assam's initiatives in cancer care and the healthcare network developed by the Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF) have emerged as a model worthy of emulation by other states in the country, Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal said on Friday.

The minister made the observation during his visit to the State Cancer Institute in Guwahati, functioning under the Assam Cancer Care Foundation, where he reviewed the progress of medical services and the adoption of advanced treatment technologies.

During the visit, Singhal inspected various departments and took stock of the healthcare facilities, infrastructure, modern medical equipment and amenities available to patients. He also interacted with patients undergoing treatment to enquire about their medical care and the facilities being provided at the institute. On the occasion, he distributed fruit baskets among the patients.

Speaking to the media after the inspection, Singhal said the Assam Cancer Care Foundation had developed a well-organised and effective system for cancer treatment. Several states across the country have expressed interest in adopting the model developed by the foundation, he added.

The minister also highlighted Assam's progress in introducing advanced medical technologies, stating that significant steps were being taken to make sophisticated treatment facilities, including proton therapy, available in the state.

Referring to the foundation's innovative initiatives, Singhal particularly mentioned its pioneering efforts in mammography screening. He said the organisation had undertaken several important initiatives to promote early detection of cancer, improve treatment facilities and ensure better healthcare services for patients.

Expressing confidence in the foundation's future role, the minister said it would continue to provide world-class cancer treatment to the people of Assam and contribute towards establishing the state as a prominent centre for cancer care.

Tezpur MLA Prithiraj Rabha, Assam Cancer Care Foundation Chief Operating Officer Dr Jay Prakash Prasad, Director of Medical Education Dr Manoj Kumar Choudhury, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital Principal Dr Babul Bezbaruah, Superintendent Dr Debajit Choudhury, along with several senior doctors and officials, were present during the review.-------------
