Thiruvananthapuram,03 Oct(HS): 'Rainfall is expected to intensify across Kerala in the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting isolated heavy showers from Sunday to Tuesday and issuing yellow alerts for several districts.

The warning covers October 4, 5 and 6. Along with rainfall, isolated locations across the State could experience thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour during this period.

On Sunday, yellow alerts will be in force in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam. These districts have been identified as areas where isolated heavy rainfall is likely as the spell of stronger rain begins.

The alert coverage will change on Monday, when Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Malappuram are expected to receive isolated heavy showers. Pathanamthitta will remain under a yellow alert for a second consecutive day, while Malappuram joins the list.

On Tuesday, the department has placed Idukki, Palakkad and Wayanad under yellow alerts. The forecast indicates that the possibility of heavy rainfall will extend to additional districts as the three-day period progresses.

Idukki features in the alert list on all three days, making it the only district covered from Sunday through Tuesday. Kottayam and Ernakulam appear in Sunday’s warning, while Palakkad and Wayanad are included in Tuesday’s forecast.

The department’s warning refers to isolated heavy rainfall, indicating that showers are expected at particular locations rather than uniformly across every part of the districts concerned.

The possibility of lightning and gusty winds accompanies the rainfall forecast for Kerala during the same period. Wind speeds could reach 50 kilometres per hour in isolated areas, according to the warning.

The forecast points to an increase in rain over the next few days, with the district-wise alerts identifying the areas likely to experience heavier showers between Sunday and Tuesday as weather conditions change across Kerala.
