New Delhi, 03 October (H.S.): Two earthquakes were recorded in Tibet near Nepal within a span of about an hour on Saturday morning. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the two earthquakes measured 3.6 and 3.1 in magnitude. The seismic activity was recorded in the seismically sensitive Himalayan region.
According to media reports citing the NCS, the first earthquake occurred at 6:00 a.m. IST. It measured 3.6 in magnitude and had a depth of approximately 15 kilometres. The epicentre was recorded at 29.623° north latitude and 92.503° east longitude. About 55 minutes later, at 6:55 a.m. IST, a second earthquake measuring 3.1 struck the region. Its epicentre was at a depth of approximately 14 kilometres, with coordinates recorded at 28.459° north latitude and 92.196° east longitude.
Both earthquakes occurred in the Tibet region, which forms part of the seismically active Himalayan zone. There were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties resulting from the tremors.
The earthquakes occurred at a time when Nepal has been affected by several natural disasters in recent days, including floods and landslides. In August, sudden flooding caused by an avalanche and landslides near the Nepal-China border led to a rise in the water level of the Bhote Koshi River. The flooding damaged homes, roads, bridges and hydropower projects.
Meanwhile, according to a situation report issued by the Nepal Red Cross Society on October 1, persistent rainfall between September 24 and 27 triggered flooding, landslides and waterlogging across several provinces. The incidents reportedly resulted in 30 deaths, 15 injuries and three people being reported missing. Around 2,000 families were affected.
