Guwahati, 03 October (HS): Police have arrested seven people, including the manager and employees of a bar in Khanapara, in connection with the alleged assault of a woman at the establishment, officials said on Saturday.

The action came after a video purportedly showing the incident inside The Locals Bar Cum Restaurant was circulated on social media. The incident reportedly took place at around 2:30 am on October 2.

Police subsequently reviewed CCTV recordings from the premises and allegedly found a group of people assaulting the woman. Investigators said she was later taken towards the basement by her hair and clothes, where she was allegedly assaulted again and appeared to become semi-conscious.

During the inquiry, police found that several of the alleged participants were associated with the bar’s management and staff. The establishment was also allegedly found operating beyond its authorised closing time of 12:30 am. Police said the management had not informed the local police station about the incident.

A suo motu case was thereafter registered at Dispur Police Station under Sections 61(2), 117(2), 74, 75, 109 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

The arrested persons have been identified as Justin D. Areng (28), bar manager; Nikebur Zaman Sarkar alias Nikebur Zaman Sardar alias Roman (30), event manager; Jhumpa Sinha (23), front office executive; Usha Devi (22); Manju Das (26); Gourav Mahanta (21); and Dino Sona (21).

Police said further legal action has been initiated and the investigation is underway. Officials are examining the individual roles of those allegedly involved, the circumstances surrounding the incident and alleged violations of the bar’s operating conditions.

The case has been registered as Dispur PS Case No. 726/2026. The allegations are subject to the outcome of the judicial process.
