New Delhi, 03 October (H.S.): Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday visited the Okhla landfill site to inspect the progress of waste disposal and review the way forward with officials. She said Delhi must be completely freed from its garbage mountains and that the entire team was working around the clock in mission mode to achieve this objective.
Speaking to reporters at the site, the Chief Minister said almost all the legacy waste accumulated before January 2025 had already been processed. The waste currently present at the site, she said, had accumulated after January 2025 and was also being processed round the clock.
Gupta said the government was working on two fronts: first, eliminating the legacy waste inherited from previous governments; and second, ensuring that the 3,000 to 4,000 metric tonnes of fresh waste generated every day was processed promptly. She said that this was why another waste-processing unit was being commissioned at the site. The unit would ensure the processing of both fresh waste and construction and demolition waste.
The Chief Minister said no new mountains of waste would be allowed to accumulate for future generations. She added that the government was working on every aspect of reducing pollution, whether it involved clearing the garbage mountains, cleaning the Yamuna or improving road infrastructure.
