Prayagraj, Oct 29 (HS): The role of media, advertising and social media in promoting tourism, preserving cultural identity and creating economic opportunities for local communities was a key focus of the Uttar Pradesh Darshan Shikhar Sammelan 2026, held at the North Central Zone Cultural Centre (NCZCC), Prayagraj.

Gaurav Virendra Agrawal, Founder and CEO of Panacea People, was invited as a speaker at the state-level conclave, representing the media and advertising sector. He addressed Session 4, “Culture, Community, Local Livelihoods and Tourism Promotion,” on the theme “From Culture to Commerce: Building Uttar Pradesh as a Global Tourism Brand Through Media and Advertising.”

The conclave, associated with Uttar Pradesh Tourism, VISA UP Tourism and the Development Leaders’ Alliance (DLA), provided a platform to discuss the promotion of the state’s spiritual, cultural and heritage tourism and the role of communication in strengthening Uttar Pradesh’s tourism identity.

Media as a Catalyst for Tourism Growth: Addressing the role of media in tourism promotion, Agrawal highlighted the potential of digital platforms, social media, visual storytelling and advertising to bring Uttar Pradesh’s diverse tourism destinations to a wider audience. Strategic communication can help transform the state’s cultural heritage and spiritual significance into a compelling proposition for domestic and international travellers.

Uttar Pradesh is home to prominent destinations such as Varanasi and the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Ayodhya, Mathura-Vrindavan, Prayagraj, Agra and Sarnath. Large-scale events, including the Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, also demonstrate the importance of coordinated communication in showcasing the state’s cultural and spiritual significance to audiences across the world.

Through destination-focused campaigns, engaging content and consistent brand messaging, media and advertising can help build awareness, strengthen destination recall and encourage visitors to explore lesser-known locations alongside established tourist centres.

Social Media, Positive Journalism and Governance: The discussion also emphasised the growing influence of social media and digital news platforms in shaping public perceptions and communicating developments related to tourism, governance and local progress.

Positive, responsible journalism can bring attention to infrastructure improvements, tourism initiatives, cultural events and emerging destinations. Social media, meanwhile, enables governments, tourism bodies, businesses and citizens to communicate directly with audiences, share experiences and build awareness.

When used responsibly, these platforms can help create a more informed public, improve the visibility of local initiatives and strengthen engagement between institutions and communities.

Reels, Storytelling and Cultural Identity: Short-form videos, reels, photographs and first-person travel experiences have emerged as influential tools for tourism promotion. Content showcasing local cuisine, handicrafts, monuments, festivals, architecture and traditional practices can make destinations more relatable and inspire people to experience them in person.

Digital creators and influencers have also demonstrated how social media can build recognition and audiences around distinctive personalities, regional stories and local culture. Creators such as Tanya Mittal, Khushal Kapila, Laman Raina and Komal Pandey were among the examples noted in the discussion of social-media-driven visibility.

Such content can help communicate the cultural identity of a destination beyond conventional advertising, provided that it remains authentic, informative and respectful of local traditions.

Tourism Promotion and Local Economic Development: The impact of tourism extends beyond visitor numbers. Effective promotion can create commercial opportunities for local shopkeepers, tour guides, hotels, restaurants, artisans, transport operators and small businesses.

By connecting these stakeholders with wider audiences, media and advertising can contribute to local economic development and community livelihoods. Increased destination visibility can encourage visitors to explore local markets, experience regional cuisine, purchase handicrafts and engage with cultural activities.

A coordinated approach involving tourism authorities, media organisations, advertising agencies, digital creators and local communities can help ensure that tourism growth translates into broader economic participation.

Building Uttar Pradesh as a Global Tourism Brand: The session reinforced the importance of viewing tourism promotion as a long-term brand-building exercise rather than a series of isolated campaigns. Consistent messaging, compelling storytelling, digital outreach and strong destination identities can help Uttar Pradesh communicate its unique combination of spirituality, history, culture, architecture and community experiences.

Agrawal’s participation brought the perspective of the advertising fraternity to the discussion, highlighting the scope for closer collaboration between media professionals, tourism stakeholders and public institutions to expand the reach of Uttar Pradesh’s tourism offerings.

The Uttar Pradesh Darshan Shikhar Sammelan 2026 provided a forum for discussing how cultural preservation, responsible communication, digital engagement and local economic development can work together to strengthen the state’s tourism ecosystem.
