Mumbai, 29 October (H.S.): Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians have announced a major reshuffle of their men’s team coaching staff, confirming their separation from Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey and Carl Hopkinson. The franchise expressed gratitude to all three for their contributions, commitment and service to the team.
The development follows Mumbai Indians’ earlier decision to part ways with head coach Mahela Jayawardene, signalling a significant restructuring of the coaching setup ahead of the next IPL season.
Former Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga remains one of the most celebrated figures in Mumbai Indians’ history. Leading the team’s bowling attack, he played a pivotal role in their four IPL title-winning campaigns. He was also part of the Mumbai Indians squad that won the Champions League Twenty20 in 2011.
After initially joining the franchise as a player, Malinga went on to serve as a mentor and coach. Mumbai Indians acknowledged his passion, competitive spirit and dedication to the team, stating that his legacy would remain an integral part of the franchise’s history.
Paras Mhambrey also shared a longstanding association with Mumbai Indians. He was with the franchise from 2010 to 2017 before returning in 2024. The former India bowling coach made significant contributions during both stints, helping identify, nurture and develop bowling talent. The franchise praised his experience, commitment and deep understanding of its team culture.
Carl Hopkinson joined Mumbai Indians’ coaching staff ahead of the 2025 season. Having previously worked with England’s men’s team, he contributed to improving the franchise’s fielding standards. Mumbai Indians also recognised his professionalism and technical expertise.
Earlier this month, Mumbai Indians announced their separation from head coach Mahela Jayawardene, who had overseen the team during the previous two seasons of his second stint with the franchise. He had earlier served as head coach from 2017 to 2022, a period during which Mumbai Indians won three IPL titles.
However, the team’s results during his second tenure were comparatively disappointing. Mumbai Indians finished fourth in the points table in 2025 before being eliminated in Qualifier 2. Their performance deteriorated further in the 2026 season, when they finished ninth.
With these departures, Mumbai Indians are undertaking a fresh overhaul of their coaching structure as they prepare for the upcoming IPL season.
