New Delhi, 29 October (H.S.): India has emerged as a global leader in green hydrogen supply commitments, with Indian companies securing offtake agreements covering more than 555,610 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) as of October 2026. The agreements are valued at approximately $9.5 billion, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi has said.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said Indian companies had signed 18 new offtake agreements in 2026 for the supply of more than 400,000 metric tonnes per annum of green hydrogen or its equivalent.

The ministry said that, as of October 2026, firm and signed agreements for green hydrogen production and supply by Indian companies had reached 555,610 metric tonnes per annum. This represents approximately 11 per cent of the target under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, positioning India among the leading countries in the global green hydrogen sector.

In a post on X, Joshi said Indian companies had secured 23 major contracts for green hydrogen supplies, involving commitments exceeding 550,000 metric tonnes per annum. More than 70 per cent of the committed volume is earmarked for global exports, he added.

The minister said the achievement had helped catalyse investment of Rs. 90,000 crore in the clean energy sector. He described it as a significant step towards strengthening India’s global leadership in the transition to net-zero emissions and creating green jobs.

According to the ministry, the Union Cabinet approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) with an initial outlay of Rs. 19,744 crore up to the financial year 2029–30. The mission aims to establish India as a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen, with a target of producing at least five million metric tonnes annually by 2030.

The mission’s anticipated outcomes include an additional 125 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity, total investments exceeding Rs. 8 lakh crore, the creation of more than six lakh full-time jobs and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 50 million metric tonnes annually.
