Monitoring conducted through
interceptor vehicles, highest 3,116 vehicles challaned on Yamuna Expressway
Initiative to reduce loss of life
in accidents, campaign against speeding launched in UP
Lucknow, Oct 29 (HS): Under the
Yogi government, continuous and effective measures are being taken to
strengthen road safety and reduce loss of life in road accidents. In this
direction, the Traffic Directorate of the Uttar Pradesh Police conducted a
special inspection campaign under ‘Operation Safe Speed’ on all expressways
across the state. During the two phases of the campaign, 6,777 vehicles were
challaned, and a total fine of Rs 1 crore 38 lakh 32 thousand 500 was recorded.
The objective of this action was to effectively curb violations of prescribed
speed limits by vehicle drivers and raise public awareness about safe road
travel.
Under this campaign, being conducted
through the Traffic Directorate on the initiative of UP DGP Rajiv Krishna,
action was taken under the direction of Additional Director General of Police
(Traffic) A. Satish Ganesh. Vehicles travelling at high speeds were monitored
using interceptor vehicles on major expressways and at identified locations
across the state. Action was taken in accordance with the prescribed rules
against those violating the stipulated speed limits.
The first phase of ‘Operation Safe
Speed’ was conducted on October 26, and the second phase on October 28, 2026.
Special inspections were conducted simultaneously on the state’s expressways
during both phases. During this exercise, the highest number of 3,116 challans
were issued on the Yamuna Expressway, and a fine of Rs 66 lakh 98 thousand was
imposed.
On the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway,
1,289 challans were issued, resulting in fines of Rs 24 lakh 18 thousand; on
the Lucknow-Agra Expressway, 537 challans were issued, resulting in fines of Rs
11 lakh 82 thousand 500; and on the Ganga Expressway, 553 challans were issued,
resulting in fines of Rs 9 lakh 40 thousand.
Similarly, on the Delhi-Meerut
Expressway, 497 challans were issued, with fines of Rs 9 lakh 94 thousand; on
the Purvanchal Expressway, 348 challans were issued, with fines of Rs 6 lakh 96
thousand; on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, 214 challans were issued, with
fines of Rs 4 lakh 28 thousand; and on the Bundelkhand Expressway, 103 challans
were issued, with fines of Rs 2 lakh 28 thousand recorded.
Meanwhile, on the
Gorakhpur-Purvanchal Link Expressway, 90 challans were issued and a fine of Rs
1 lakh 88 thousand was imposed, while on the Kanpur-Varanasi Highway, 30
challans were issued and a fine of Rs 60 thousand was imposed.
According to the Traffic Directorate,
driving at excessive speeds is one of the major causes of road accidents. When
an accident occurs due to excessive speed, the likelihood of it being serious
or fatal increases. Accordingly, the campaign aims not only to issue challans
but also to develop among vehicle drivers the habit of following traffic rules
and driving at safe speeds.
Efforts are being made to make
traffic management safer through monitoring by interceptor vehicles on all
expressways across the state and action against those violating the rules.
Through this initiative by the government and the police, vehicle drivers are
being reminded to comply with the prescribed speed limits.
Under the campaign, the police are
emphasising that vehicle drivers must pay attention not only to their own
safety but also to the safety of other people using the road. Compliance with
prescribed speed limits is not merely a legal obligation but also a
responsibility to save lives.
