New Delhi, 28 October (H.S.): The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has foiled an alleged wildlife smuggling attempt at Tiruchirappalli International Airport in Tamil Nadu, recovering 45 live reptiles and arresting two Indian passengers in connection with the case.

The passengers arrived in India on October 26 after travelling from Bangkok via Colombo. The reptiles had allegedly been concealed in 27 food packets. During the inspection, officials found all the animals in an unconscious state.

According to the Union Finance Ministry, the seizure was made by the DRI in coordination with the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs at Tiruchirappalli Airport, acting on specific intelligence inputs. The reptiles were recovered during a systematic examination of the passengers’ baggage.

The seized animals comprised 23 corn snakes, 16 ball pythons, five Argentine black-and-white tegus and one snow-white iguana.

The AIU arrested both passengers under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. The recovered reptiles have been handed over to the AIU in Tiruchirappalli for further necessary action.

The seizure highlights ongoing efforts by enforcement agencies to curb the illegal trafficking of exotic wildlife through international airports. Further action in the case will be taken in accordance with the applicable legal provisions.
