New Delhi, 28 October (H.S.): The Union Government has introduced the Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme to establish a globally competitive sports manufacturing ecosystem in the country. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved an allocation of Rs. 1,856.67 crore for the initiative.
Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters that the scheme would be implemented over the period from 2026 to 2033-34. The initiative aims to strengthen domestic sports goods manufacturing, encourage investment, innovation and exports, generate employment opportunities, and enhance India’s global competitiveness in the sector.
Under the scheme, Rs. 1,130 crore has been earmarked to support investment and scale up production, while Rs. 105 crore has been allocated for certification by international sports federations.
The initiative will focus on developing sports goods manufacturing clusters and strengthening micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), as well as existing manufacturing hubs. It will also support research and development, innovation, start-ups and skill development to improve the quality and competitiveness of Indian sports goods.
In addition, the scheme seeks to promote Indian-made sports equipment in international markets, expand export opportunities and create a stronger manufacturing base capable of competing globally.
