Imphal, 27 October (H.S.): Security forces
seized 11 firearms during a search operation in Manipur’s Imphal East district,
police said on Tuesday, as joint security operations continue across the state
amid renewed tensions following recent violence.
The latest
recovery comes amid intensified efforts by Manipur Police and central security
forces to recover illegal weapons, ammunition and explosives and identify those
involved in recent attacks.
In a separate
operation following the October 19 killing of three civilians near Sunurok Hill
along the Imphal East–Kangpokpi boundary, security forces arrested three
suspected cadres of the Kuki National Front (Nehlun) and recovered 12 firearms,
1,095 rounds of ammunition, explosives and other equipment, according to
Manipur Police.
Security forces
also conducted a search at Sinai Camp, a designated camp associated with Kuki
armed groups under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangement.
The operation
on October 23 resulted in the arrest of 17 people who allegedly impersonated
registered cadres and the seizure of 24 firearms, magazines, ammunition,
explosives and communication equipment, police said.
The operations
have brought renewed attention to the circulation of unauthorised weapons and
compliance with security arrangements in the state. The SoO agreement, which
covered several Kuki armed groups, expired on September 4 and has not been
renewed, according to Manipur's Home Minister.
