Kathmandu, 27 October (H.S.):
Nepal’s premier cricket extravaganza got underway on Monday at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Stadium, bringing the Nepal Premier League (NPL), popularly billed as the “Festival of the Himalayas”, back into the spotlight. This edition promises to give cricket enthusiasts an opportunity to watch several internationally renowned stars in action.
With ICC-recognised T20 matches, the Decision Review System (DRS) and the presence of celebrated international cricketers, the tournament is set to add to the excitement at the stadium in Kirtipur. Here is a look at eight overseas players, one representing each franchise, who are expected to draw particular attention during the competition.
1. Andre Russell — Biratnagar Kings
“Andre Russell in, ball out.” Cricket fans will be familiar with the excitement surrounding the West Indian power-hitter, renowned for his explosive six-hitting, pace and variations with the ball, and exceptional agility in the field. Russell will represent the Biratnagar Kings in this edition of the NPL.
In T20 cricket, Russell’s presence at the crease keeps opposition teams on edge until the final ball. He was part of the West Indies squads that won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016. He also helped Kolkata Knight Riders secure IPL titles in 2014 and 2024.
Russell has also enjoyed success in the Caribbean Premier League and the Bangladesh Premier League. His ability to make an impact with both bat and ball could prove a major asset for the Biratnagar Kings, led by Sandeep Lamichhane.
2. David Warner — Kathmandu Gorkhas
Few opening batters in world cricket can put opposition bowlers under immediate pressure quite like Australian veteran David Warner. Known for his fearless starts, aggressive stroke play and relentless appetite for runs, Warner has established himself as one of the most accomplished opening batters of his generation.
Warner played an important role in Australia’s triumphs at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups in 2015 and 2023, as well as its victory at the 2021 T20 World Cup. His record in the Indian Premier League has also been impressive. He was instrumental in helping Sunrisers Hyderabad win their maiden IPL title in 2016 and has claimed the IPL Orange Cap three times.
Warner will turn out for Kathmandu Gorkhas in the NPL. The tournament offers him an opportunity to showcase his skills before a new audience, while young Nepali cricketers will be able to observe his aggressive batting approach at close quarters.
3. David Miller — Karnali Yaks
Getting off to a good start is one thing; holding one's nerve under pressure in the closing overs and guiding a team to victory is an entirely different skill. South African batter David Miller, popularly known as “Killer Miller”, has built a reputation for excelling in such situations.
Batting in the middle order, Miller can stabilise an innings when required and accelerate rapidly when the opportunity arises, clearing the boundary with remarkable ease.
He brings extensive franchise-cricket experience, having represented teams such as Kings XI Punjab and Gujarat Titans in the IPL. His performances were particularly influential in Gujarat Titans’ maiden IPL title-winning campaign in 2022.
Miller will now strengthen the middle order of Karnali Yaks. His presence offers young Nepali batters an opportunity to learn about finishing innings under pressure, reading bowlers’ strategies and maintaining composure until the final stages of a match.
4. Sherfane Rutherford — Sudurpaschim Royals
In T20 cricket, a batter can transform the complexion of a match in just five or six deliveries. West Indian left-hander Sherfane Rutherford is among the players capable of producing such explosive spells.
His principal strengths are aggressive stroke play and the ability to score quickly. Representing Sudurpaschim Royals, Rutherford is known for assessing the match situation before launching an attack.
He has featured in several prominent franchise competitions, including the Caribbean Premier League, the IPL, the Pakistan Super League and the Bangladesh Premier League. He was also part of the Karachi Kings squad that won the Pakistan Super League in 2021 and the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots side that lifted the Caribbean Premier League title in 2022.
