Kolkata, 27 October (H.S.): In a significant transformation of West Bengal's industrial landscape, the Raghunathpur area of Purulia is set to emerge as a new epicenter for defense manufacturing. The state government has allocated approximately 256 acres of land in the Jungle Sundari Karmanagari Phase-2 Industrial Park to Jupiter Defense Private Limited. This strategic allocation paves the way for the state's first major integrated defense manufacturing complex, providing a substantial thrust to the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) initiative. The project is exclusively a private sector endeavor and not a government ordnance factory.

The land allocation documents were formally handed over to Murari Lal Lohia, Chairman Emeritus of Jupiter Wagons, during a ceremony at Kolkata's Milan Mela ground on September 23, in the presence of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The proposed facility will be an Integrated Ammunition Manufacturing and Filling Complex, meaning the entire process from manufacturing ammunition to filling will be executed within a single campus. Billed as Bengal's first private defense manufacturing project in the non-shipbuilding sector, the state-of-the-art facility is targeted for completion within three years.

The establishment of this defense factory is expected to yield multidimensional benefits for Purulia, West Bengal, and the nation. Beyond direct employment, the project holds immense potential for generating indirect jobs across transportation, security, maintenance, and service sectors. It will open new business avenues for local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) involved in defense equipment components, packaging, machining, and logistics.

Furthermore, the initiative will create pathways for technical training for local youth, fostering direct industry linkages with regional ITIs and polytechnic institutes.

The project has also brought a wave of optimism to the Rukni area of the Raghunathpur-2 block. The allocated site was originally acquired for a steel industry during the Left Front regime but had remained vacant for years, leading to widespread local resentment. The successful implementation of this defense project is anticipated to attract further suppliers and investors to other industrial parks, elevating Bengal from a rail-based industrial hub to a premier defense manufacturing destination in Eastern India.

On a national scale, the complex will play a crucial role in meeting India's domestic defense requirements. India's defense production reached a record Rs 1,78,000 crore with a 15.6 percent growth in the recent fiscal year, with the private sector's share rising to approximately 24 percent (around Rs 42,000 crore). Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has set an ambitious target to increase this private sector contribution to 50 percent, a goal this integrated complex will directly support.

Highlighting the strategic and national significance of the project, renowned defense expert Satyam Singh noted that the factory is not merely a manufacturing unit but the foundation of a robust new defense production ecosystem in Eastern India. Speaking to Hindusthan Samachar, Singh emphasized that as India pushes for complete indigenization of its defense needs, Jupiter Defense's integrated complex will serve as a milestone in reducing military import dependency. He explained that housing ammunition manufacturing and filling in a single complex streamlines the supply chain, ensuring an uninterrupted flow of quality munitions to the armed forces even during emergencies. Noting that the country's defense exports have touched an all-time high of Rs 38,424 crore, Singh added that the entry of companies like Jupiter Defense will further catalyze India's export ambitions, which target a Rs 10,000 crore turnover in this sector by 2028-29.

Underscoring the broader economic momentum, Industry Minister Tapas Roy stated that the September 23 allocation was part of a larger industrial push, with a total of 33 projects allotted in the state. These projects are projected to draw an investment of around Rs 60,000 crore and generate approximately 62,000 employment opportunities.
