Kochi fatal crash: ADGP promises impartial probe, scrutiny of police lapses
ADGP Vijayan

Kochi, 27 Oct (H.S.): Additional Director General of Police P. Vijayan on Tuesday assured an impartial investigation into the death of a scooter rider allegedly hit by a car driven by a judge’s 17-year-old son at Cheranelloor, saying any police lapses would also be examined.

Vijayan visited the accident site after reviewing the investigation at Cheranelloor police station. He also met the family of the deceased, Jayabalakrishnan, a roadside eatery operator, and assured them that their complaints would receive priority.

“There is no distinction here between a judge and a police officer. Anyone found to have committed wrongdoing will face legal action,” he said, stressing that justice would be ensured for the bereaved family.

The ADGP described the family’s demands as reasonable and said investigators would examine their allegations, relevant records and CCTV footage, including recordings from the police station, before deciding further action.

Referring to the Home Minister’s remarks on the handling of the case, Vijayan said his visit was intended to establish whether lapses had occurred and identify those responsible.

“I have come to examine what went wrong and who was responsible. I will meet everyone connected with the matter before leaving,” he said.

Vijayan was accompanied by a special team that included Assistant Inspector General Anuj Paliwal. Kochi City Police Commissioner Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar and other senior police officers were also present during the inspection.

The team collected information about the collision at the scene and will scrutinise events at the police station as part of its review.

Asked about the possibility of arresting the judge, Vijayan said the decision was not his alone and would require procedural steps, including court permission. Police had already moved swiftly on the matter, he added.

Further action would follow without undue delay, based on the findings of the inquiry, the ADGP said.
