Beed, 26 Oct (HS): Environmentalists have opposed the proposed Torrent
Power Project near Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary in Karjat Tehsil of Raigad
district. Felling of about 35,000 trees in 600 acres of land is suspected for the
project. They staged demonstrations in front of the district collector’s office
on Monday and demanded shifting of the project elsewhere as it will affect the
natural habitat of the wildlife.
Dr Ganesh Dhawle, social worker led the agitation. The agitators
demanded protection of biodiversity and wildlife in
the area, which is likely to be affected due to the proposed project.
The agitators handed over a memorandum of demands to the District
Collector. The State Government should intervene to protect the wildlife and forest
in the region, they demanded.
