New Delhi, 26 October (H.S.): Delhi Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh on Monday inspected the Rao Tula Ram (RTR) Flyover in the national capital and directed that it be reopened to light vehicles from Monday evening.
Sahib Singh said the inspection had revealed several structural concerns in the section containing the gap slab, including deteriorating concrete, cracks and exposed steel reinforcement bars. In view of these safety concerns, vehicular movement had been temporarily suspended on the flyover.
He said the necessary repair work had been completed and the flyover would be reopened to light vehicles from Monday evening. Built in 2009, the flyover is also undergoing a comprehensive structural audit to assess its condition and ensure its long-term stability and safety.
Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa was also present during the inspection.
Sirsa said the inspection was conducted alongside Sahib Singh to ensure that Delhi residents faced less traffic congestion and pollution during the Diwali period. He noted that congestion around the flyover had turned the area into a major pollution hotspot.
Taking into account the inconvenience faced by commuters, Sirsa said directions had been issued to complete the essential repair work by 6 pm on Monday and reopen the flyover. He added that further work required to facilitate heavy traffic would also be undertaken.
The Environment Minister said that, under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi government was continuously monitoring pollution hotspots across the capital. He added that efforts to reduce traffic congestion and pollution were being carried out on a war footing to ensure that residents did not face unnecessary inconvenience during the festive period.
