New Delhi, 25 October (H.S.): A meeting of the Committee of Presiding Officers, constituted at the initiative of the Lok Sabha Speaker to develop uniform model rules of procedure and conduct of business for legislative bodies across the country, will be held in Delhi on October 27.

Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta announced on Sunday that the meeting would deliberate on the draft report concerning the proposed uniform model rules and examine the recommendations contained in it.

The meeting will take place at the Taj Hotel on Sardar Patel Marg in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana. Gupta, a member of the committee, will deliver the welcome address.

Presiding officers and representatives from the legislative assemblies of Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Delhi are expected to participate in the deliberations. Among those attending will be Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, Himachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania and Karnataka Assembly Speaker U. T. Khader, along with other committee members and officials from the participating legislatures.

The principal agenda will be to examine the draft report and its recommendations on the proposed uniform model rules. The committee will review the proposals and deliberate on establishing a common framework for legislative procedures and the conduct of business across different legislative bodies. Discussions may also address issues requiring further consideration or clarification.

Gupta said the meeting would provide an important opportunity for dialogue, coordination and the exchange of procedural experiences among legislative institutions. The collective exercise is expected to contribute to strengthening democratic traditions and improving the effective functioning of legislatures across the country.

The Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat is coordinating arrangements for the participating presiding officers and delegations. A designated liaison officer will be assigned to each delegation to facilitate coordination and protocol-related arrangements. Committee members have been accorded the status of state guests, with appropriate arrangements and security to be provided accordingly.

Following the meeting, committee members will interact with the media and share details of the deliberations, recommendations and the next steps towards finalising the proposed uniform model rules.
