New Delhi, 25 October (H.S.): External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday said the world was grappling with two major conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, with societies and economies having no direct involvement in the hostilities bearing some of the heaviest consequences. He stressed that the international community could not afford to remain helpless spectators and asserted that India, by advocating dialogue and diplomacy, was articulating the broader sentiment of the global community.

Addressing the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Conference, Jaishankar said that in an era defined by complex supply chains, globalised markets and shared resources, the world could not advance while some sections prospered and others remained deprived. Such an imbalance, he observed, would only perpetuate instability.

In his address, the External Affairs Minister described terrorism as a grave threat to peace and criticised countries that continued to place political calculations above the imperative of combating it. He said the use of terrorism as an instrument of state policy was unacceptable and could never be justified.

Jaishankar emphasised that the international community needed to become more conscious of this shared threat and unite with firm resolve against all forms of terrorism.

Referring to United Nations Day, observed on October 24, the minister said humanity had long debated the competing forces of rivalry and cooperation. These tensions, he noted, were reflected in relations among countries at the global level.

The establishment of the United Nations eight decades ago represented an expression of the collective spirit of cooperation, he said. Jaishankar stressed that promoting solidarity on United Nations Day remained essential, as effective responses to global challenges and the realisation of shared opportunities were possible only through collective efforts.

He reiterated that India remained willing to work with other partners to advance dialogue, diplomacy and cooperation in addressing international conflicts and shared challenges.
