New Delhi, 24 October (H.S.):
Mumbai Indians have appointed former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard as their head coach ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, marking a significant change in the franchise's coaching leadership. Pollard succeeds Mahela Jayawardene, whose second stint as head coach concluded following the team's disappointing campaign in IPL 2026.
The five-time IPL champions have been without a title since their triumph in 2020. With the franchise seeking to end its prolonged title drought, the management has entrusted the responsibility to Pollard, one of the most influential figures in the team's history.
Pollard has shared a nearly 16-year association with Mumbai Indians, having joined the franchise as a young player in 2010. His performances in the early editions of the Champions League Twenty20 further enhanced his reputation as a dynamic T20 cricketer. Over the years, he played a pivotal role in Mumbai Indians' success before transitioning into the coaching set-up as the team's batting coach.
His extensive understanding of the franchise's culture, working methods and players is expected to be an important asset in his new role. Pollard also shares a strong rapport with Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya, both of whom have captained Mumbai Indians at different stages. His leadership and tactical approach will therefore be closely watched as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
The appointment comes amid speculation surrounding the future roles of several prominent players and the team's broader leadership structure. With questions also being raised about Rohit Sharma's potential influence within the set-up, Pollard's approach to team management and planning for IPL 2027 will attract considerable attention.
Mumbai Indians co-owner Nita M. Ambani expressed confidence in Pollard's ability to lead the franchise, emphasising his longstanding association with the team and his understanding of what it means to represent Mumbai Indians.
“Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a young 22-year-old and, over the past sixteen years, has become an integral part of our family,” Ambani said. She added that she was confident he would bring the same commitment, belief and determination to his new responsibilities, wishing him success as he led the team into its next chapter.
Pollard described his appointment as an honour, highlighting the significance of his longstanding relationship with the franchise.
“Having experienced this journey as a player and then as a coach, I understand what Mumbai Indians stands for and the responsibility that comes with representing the Blue and Gold,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and the wider Mumbai Indians family for their trust, adding that he looked forward to working closely with the players and support staff, nurturing emerging talent and building on the franchise's legacy.
Pollard now faces the challenge of restoring Mumbai Indians to title-winning form and positioning the franchise among the leading contenders for IPL 2027.
