Kolkata, 24 October (H.S.) : Tension gripped the Natun Palli area of Durgapur after unidentified miscreants allegedly pelted stones at the residences of several Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers late Friday night. The sudden attack, accompanied by foul language and verbal abuses, has sparked widespread panic among the local residents.
According to local sources and newly surfaced CCTV footage, the incident occurred deep into the night when three youths arrived in the locality in a red four-wheeler. Upon stepping out of the vehicle, the miscreants began hurling bricks and stones at specific houses, continuously shouting obscenities at the residents before fleeing the scene.
Sanjay Roy, one of the targeted homeowners, alleged that the attackers were recent defectors acting out of political vendetta. These three individuals were never associated with the BJP previously; they only joined the party after the 4th [referring to the recent election results]. I fail to understand their sudden anger towards us. Perhaps we are being targeted simply because we supported the TMC. They not only threw stones but also hurled filthy abuses. We have formally informed the police about the incident, Roy stated.
Reacting to the allegations, BJP district spokesperson Sumanta Mandal strongly condemned the violence while distancing his party from the attackers. Issuing a stern warning, Mandal said, The BJP does not endorse or support such a political culture. Strict action will be taken against whoever is behind this. However, I strongly suspect that this is a direct fallout of the TMC's internal factional feuds from the past, which are now resurfacing as individuals find opportunities to settle old scores. The police must take immediate and stringent action against anyone trying to disrupt the peace of Durgapur, regardless of their political affiliation.
Local police have initiated an investigation into the matter and are examining the CCTV footage to identify and apprehend the culprits.
