Shillong , 24 October (H.S.): Hundreds of supporters gathered to welcome Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) president Raymond Kharjana and general secretary Reuben Najiar after they were released on bail from Shillong District Jail.
Following their release on the orders of the District and Sessions Court in East Khasi Hills, KSU members assembled at Motphran and took out a procession to the union’s office at Jaiaw.
The two leaders were arrested on August 19 in connection with violence that erupted following a black-flag rally organised by the student body.
Speaking after his release, Najiar denied the union leaders’ involvement in the violence and asserted that the KSU would continue to pursue the issues it had raised.
He said the union would continue to take up matters concerning Shree Cement, the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) and recruitment reforms, among other issues.
Najiar also stated that the union would continue its activities in compliance with the conditions imposed by the court in its bail order.
The leaders’ release comes as the KSU continues to raise concerns relating to employment, institutional affairs and other issues in Meghalaya.
