Chennai, 23 Oct (H.S.): Tamil Nadu transport corporations will operate 2,725 special buses from Friday to Sunday to accommodate increased passenger demand during the weekend, the auspicious wedding day on October 25 and full moon observances.
The additional services will supplement regular schedules, helping passengers travelling from Chennai to other destinations and those returning to the city after the weekend, the State Express Transport Corporation said in a statement.
From Chennai’s Kilambakkam bus terminus, 775 additional buses will operate on Friday and 485 on Saturday to destinations including Tiruvannamalai, Tiruchirappalli, Kumbakonam, Madurai and Tirunelveli.
Koyambedu will have 95 special services on Friday and 85 on Saturday, connecting Chennai with Nagapattinam, Velankanni, Hosur and Bengaluru.
From Madhavaram, 65 additional buses will run on each of the two days to Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Tiruchirappalli, Kumbakonam, Vellore, Hosur and Puducherry.
To meet demand associated with full moon observances, another 250 special buses will be operated to Tiruvannamalai on Sunday. The town is expected to attract devotees travelling for the occasion.
A further 100 special buses will operate on Sunday from Bengaluru, Tiruppur, Erode and Coimbatore to various destinations, providing additional connections for passengers travelling between these centres and other towns.
Transport corporations have also earmarked 805 special buses for return journeys on Sunday. These services will operate from various locations to Chennai and Bengaluru, depending on passenger requirements.
The arrangements cover both the outward rush ahead of the weekend and the return movement as travellers head back after visiting their hometowns or attending weddings and religious observances.
The corporation said the additional services were planned in anticipation of heavier traffic between Chennai and other towns during the three-day period. The combined deployment across departure terminals, regional routes, Tiruvannamalai services and return journeys will bring the total number of special buses to 2,725, according to the statement.
