Mumbai, October 23 (H.S.): National Award-winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar is reportedly preparing to make a film based on the life of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, exploring the political journey, legacy and lesser-known aspects of the prominent Indian political leader’s life.

According to reports, the proposed film will bring to the screen previously unexplored facets of Mookerjee’s personal life, political career and enduring legacy. The project will be backed by Aditya Kumar Halwasia and produced under the banners of Bhandarkar Entertainment and AKH Ventures. Production is expected to commence next year.

The film is tentatively titled *Shyama: The Missing Chapter*, according to reports. However, an official announcement confirming the project, its cast and further details of the storyline is still awaited.

Reports suggest that Bhandarkar will turn his attention to the project after completing work on his upcoming film, *The Wives of Bollywood*. Known for exploring socially relevant themes and real-life subjects through his films, the director has generated considerable interest with the proposed project on Mookerjee. Audiences will be keen to see how the filmmaker portrays the defining moments and lesser-known dimensions of the political leader’s life.

Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee was born in Kolkata on July 6, 1901. He served as independent India’s first Minister for Industry and Civil Supplies and founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the political predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Mookerjee strongly opposed the constitutional arrangement that granted Jammu and Kashmir special status. In 1953, he was arrested after entering Jammu and Kashmir without a permit. He died in custody on June 23, 1953, under circumstances that have remained a subject of controversy. He was 51 years old at the time of his death.

The proposed film is expected to revisit these significant events and examine their place in Mookerjee’s political journey and legacy. Attention will now be focused on how Bhandarkar interprets the leader’s life and presents these historical developments on screen.
