New Delhi, 23 October (H.S.): A court at Delhi’s Tis Hazari Courts complex on Friday remanded content creator Amir Shokeen to one day of judicial custody in a case involving alleged racial remarks and abusive behaviour towards a man from Tripura. The Delhi Police had sought six days of police custody for further investigation.
Shokeen was arrested by the Delhi Police on October 22 and produced before a duty magistrate. The magistrate directed that he be presented before the appropriate regular court for the hearing. He is scheduled to be produced before the court again on Saturday. An FIR in the case has been registered at Sadar Bazar police station in Delhi.
Separately, the Tripura Police have registered another FIR in connection with the incident. The case relates to a video circulating on social media that allegedly shows a content creator making racially derogatory remarks against a man from Tripura and subjecting him to humiliating treatment.
The Tripura Police registered the case against Shokeen on October 22 at the New Capital Complex police station in West Tripura district. The FIR invokes relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Information Technology Act and the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
A team of Tripura Police has reached Delhi to pursue the necessary legal proceedings and seek Shokeen’s transit remand, which would enable his transfer to Tripura for further investigation.
According to the police, the controversial video was recorded in Ahmedabad approximately a month ago. The investigation is continuing into the circumstances surrounding the recording and circulation of the video, as well as the alleged conduct depicted in it.
