India Secure Sixth Table Tennis Medal at Current Edition

Aichi-Nagoya, October 22(HS): India’s Bhavina Patel and Shubham Wadhwa won the bronze medal in the mixed doubles XD-7 category of the para table tennis competition at the Asian Para Games. The Indian duo suffered a 1-3 defeat against South Korea’s Yeongjin Jang and Migu Lee in the semi-finals on Thursday but secured a bronze medal despite missing out on a place in the final.

The South Korean pair won the semi-final encounter 11-6, 8-11, 11-5, 11-9. The Indian duo fought back to level the contest by winning the second game, but defeats in the next two games ended their hopes of advancing to the final.

The medal marks India’s first in the doubles events of para table tennis at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. It is also the country’s sixth medal in table tennis at the current edition of the competition.

For Patel, the bronze is her second medal at the Games. She had earlier secured bronze in the women’s singles category in the Class 4-5 event.

With this achievement, India’s overall medal tally has risen to 73. Indian athletes have so far won 17 gold, 22 silver and 34 bronze medals.
