Christchurch, October 22 (H.S.): Powered by a spectacular half-century from Sanju Samson and impressive contributions from Shreyas Iyer and Naman Dhir, India defeated New Zealand by four wickets in the first T20 International of the series on Thursday. Chasing a target of 226, India scored 230 for six in 19.4 overs to seal the victory and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20 International series.
Samson and Dhir were the chief architects of India's triumph. Samson laid a strong foundation for the challenging chase with an explosive 67 off just 33 balls, putting the New Zealand bowlers under sustained pressure with an array of boundaries and sixes. Dhir then produced a blistering finish, remaining unbeaten on 42 off only 15 deliveries, including five fours and two sixes. He sealed the victory with a six.
With this successful chase, India also registered the highest target they have ever overhauled in T20 International cricket. Their previous record was a successful pursuit of 209 runs against Australia in Visakhapatnam in 2023.
Abhishek Provides an Aggressive Start
India got off to a flying start in pursuit of the imposing 226-run target, with Abhishek Sharma and Samson taking the attack to New Zealand during the powerplay. Abhishek smashed 29 off 12 balls before Michael Bracewell dismissed him in the final over of the powerplay. India raced to 94 for one at the end of the first six overs.
Samson continued the onslaught, bringing up his half-century in just 23 balls. However, Mitchell Santner dismissed him in the ninth over. Samson's 67 came off 33 deliveries, and his departure increased the pressure on the Indian batting line-up.
Bracewell then dealt India another blow by removing Tilak Varma for six. Tilak faced 11 deliveries before departing. Ishan Kishan also failed to make a significant contribution, scoring just one run before falling to Santner. The succession of wickets left India facing a challenging situation despite its explosive start.
Iyer and Axar Steady the Innings Before Dhir Seals the Win
At a crucial stage, captain Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel attempted to stabilise the innings. The pair added 45 runs off 24 balls, with Axar contributing 24 from 14 deliveries. However, Lockie Ferguson dismissed Axar, interrupting the partnership.
Iyer and Dhir subsequently adopted an aggressive approach and brought India closer to the target. Iyer scored 42 off 28 balls before Adam Milne dismissed him in the 19th over.
Despite the setback, Dhir combined composure with attacking intent under pressure. With India needing eight runs in the final over, he struck a six to secure a memorable victory for the visitors.
Glenn Phillips' Unbeaten 82 Powers New Zealand to Record Total
Earlier, after being put in to bat, New Zealand posted an imposing 225 for four in 20 overs, propelled by Glenn Phillips' unbeaten 82 and aggressive starts from Finn Allen and Tim Seifert. The total was New Zealand's highest in T20 International cricket on home soil.
Phillips remained unbeaten on 82 off 40 balls, striking eight fours and three sixes. Allen contributed 45 from 24 deliveries, including five fours and two sixes, while Bevon Jacobs added further momentum with 31 off 16 balls, hitting three sixes.
Seifert scored 24 off 17 balls before Indian fast bowler Mayank Yadav claimed the first wicket, having him caught by Samson. Allen continued to attack before Axar Patel dismissed him, with Tilak Varma completing the catch. Allen's 45 had given New Zealand a strong platform in the powerplay.
Phillips and Jacobs Accelerate New Zealand's Scoring
During the middle overs, Phillips and Daryl Mitchell kept New Zealand's innings moving. Mitchell scored 28 off 19 balls before Arshdeep Singh dismissed him, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar taking the catch to provide India with its third breakthrough.
Jacobs then came to the crease and immediately adopted an attacking approach, putting the Indian bowlers under pressure. Phillips reached his half-century in just 27 balls and combined with Jacobs for a 73-run partnership. Jacobs was eventually run out after scoring 31.
Phillips continued to score rapidly even after Jacobs' dismissal. New Zealand collected 14 runs off Bhuvneshwar in the final over to finish on 225 for four. Michael Bracewell remained unbeaten on seven.
Bhuvneshwar's Comeback Disappoints
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to the Indian team after four years proved disappointing. He conceded 49 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket. Mayank Yadav, Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh claimed one wicket each, although all three also conceded runs at a considerable rate.
Despite New Zealand's formidable total, India's batters delivered an outstanding performance under pressure to complete a record chase and secure victory in the series opener.
