Rijiju warns of strict action over alleged racial abuse of Tripura youth

Guwahati, Oct 22: Guwahati: Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has condemned the alleged racial abuse of a youth from Tripura by Delhi-based content creator Amir Shokeen, warning that the accused would face strict action.

In a post on X, Rijiju said Delhi and Tripura Police would take action against Shokeen despite the delay in filing an official complaint.

“This evil man will be punished. There was delay in lodging the official complaint but Delhi Police and Tripura Police will teach him a hard lesson. People who tolerate such wicked behavior in the society are also responsible for the spread of hatred,” Rijiju said.

The controversy erupted after a purported video showing Shokeen allegedly making racially derogatory remarks against the youth went viral on social media, triggering widespread outrage across the Northeast.

The incident has renewed concerns over racial discrimination against people from the region, with political leaders and social media users condemning the alleged remarks.

Meanwhile, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has directed the state’s Director General of Police to coordinate with Delhi Police over the incident. He has assured that appropriate legal action would be taken.

The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), the youth wing of the Tipra Motha Party, has also filed a police complaint against Shokeen, accusing him of racial harassment and making defamatory remarks against an indigenous youth from Tripura.

The complaint was submitted to the officer-in-charge of Agartala’s NCC Police Station on Wednesday. The organisation has sought registration of an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, 2000.

The YTF has further urged the police to coordinate with cybercrime authorities and Delhi Police to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
