Guwahati, 22 October (HS): Nine people were killed and 105 others injured in road accidents in Guwahati during the Durga Puja festivities from October 16 to 21. Of the injured, 82 people are currently undergoing treatment, including 67 men and 15 women.
According to data from Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), the hospital treated 114 road accident victims during the six-day period, of whom nine succumbed to their injuries. The figures highlight road safety challenges during the festive season, when increased movement of people visiting puja pandals and participating in celebrations puts additional pressure on traffic.
Around 20% of the injured victims are reported to be in serious condition and continue to require medical attention. Two-wheeler-related accidents accounted for a significant proportion of the cases, highlighting the risks faced by motorists amid increased traffic during the festivities.
Despite the fatalities and serious injuries, the total number of road accidents in Guwahati declined by 15% compared with the corresponding period last year.-----------
