Kochi, 22 Oct (H.S.): A court in Angamaly has rejected a petition seeking the transfer of Suhail, the 19-year-old prime accused in the Nedumbassery Mini Cooper crash that killed three people, from the Kakkanad Borstal School to a central prison.
Judicial First Class Magistrate Samyuktha M.K. dismissed the petition filed by the superintendent of the institution, which houses young prisoners aged between 18 and 21.
The superintendent had argued that accommodating Suhail at the Borstal School posed security concerns and sought his transfer to a central jail. After examining the arguments presented in the petition, the court declined to allow the request.
Suhail’s placement in the Borstal School instead of a regular prison had earlier drawn widespread criticism. The latest order means he will continue to remain at the Kakkanad institution.
The crash occurred in the early hours of October 11 on the Nedumbassery airport road. According to the allegations in the case, a speeding Mini Cooper, driven under the influence of alcohol, rammed into a scooter carrying three young people.
All three scooter occupants died at the scene.
The accused have approached the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court for bail after the magistrate’s court rejected their applications. Their petitions are now before the higher court.
Meanwhile, investigators visited the home of Devika, one of those killed in the crash, at Kalpetta in Wayanad on Thursday morning.
A five-member police team collected information from her family and recorded detailed statements as part of the continuing investigation into the fatal collision.
Speaking to the media after the visit, Devika’s family said investigators had gathered crucial evidence in the case. They expressed hope that their daughter would receive justice.
The police visit came as proceedings over the accused’s custody and bail continued, with the bereaved family awaiting further progress in the investigation and court proceedings.
