Guwahati, 20 October (HS): Several members of the Raijor Dal were detained by police on Tuesday while attempting to stage a protest outside Janata Bhawan in Dispur, demanding justice in connection with the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.

Security was tightened in the area ahead of the demonstration. The protesters had gathered to form a human chain and press for accountability in the singer’s death.

The protest was organised following a call by Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi. The party members demanded that those responsible for the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death be held accountable and that justice be ensured in the case.

Before the demonstration, Gogoi had expressed hope that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would allow the protest to proceed peacefully and accept a memorandum from the demonstrators.

However, as the protesters assembled outside Janata Bhawan, security arrangements were strengthened and police detained several party members.

The demonstration comes amid continued demands for accountability over Garg’s death in Singapore on September 19, 2025. Further details regarding the number of people detained and the reasons for their detention were not immediately available.--------
