Imphal, 20 October (HS): A 44-year-old Kuki civilian was allegedly shot dead by armed men while collecting wild bamboo shoots in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district police informed on Tuesday, prompting local organisations to demand an impartial investigation and tighter security for residents.
The deceased, Paolenmung Thangeo, was a resident of P. Muolding village. According to statements issued by the P. Muolding Village Authority and the P. Muolding Youth Club, the incident occurred around 7 am when Thangeo and Laldenga, a resident of Molhoi village, went into a forest to collect bamboo shoots for their livelihood.
The village authority alleged that the assailants were Tangkhul/Liangmei Kacha Naga militants affiliated with the NSCN-IM and ZUF(K). However, the allegations have not been independently verified.
Thangeo succumbed to his injuries, while his companion reportedly escaped. He is survived by his wife, Kholneichong Thangeo, and their three children.
The killing has renewed concerns over the safety of civilians in the Leimakhong area. The village authority also cited the recent abduction and killing of Hemjang Haokip, a resident of Khunkho Kuki village, as another incident highlighting the vulnerability of Kuki-Zo civilians.
Condemning the attack, the authority said repeated incidents of violence had created fear and insecurity among residents, particularly those who depend on forest produce for their livelihood.
It urged the Central and Manipur governments, along with the concerned security agencies, to conduct an immediate and impartial investigation, identify the perpetrators and ensure their prosecution under the law. It also called for stronger security arrangements in Leimakhong and adjoining areas to prevent further attacks.
The P. Muolding Youth Club separately denounced the killing, describing it as an assault on the fundamental rights to life, safety and human dignity. It demanded that those responsible be brought to justice and appealed to all concerned parties to exercise restraint and refrain from violence and intimidation.
Both organisations expressed condolences to the bereaved family and stressed that civilians must be able to pursue their livelihoods without fear. They called for immediate measures to protect residents and prevent further loss of life.------------
